Yes, they are out to get you, consciously or unconsciously. Half of them don't actually want to be driving, they just have no other way to get from A to B.

First lesson from a "Bike-safe" Instructor:
"Assume every other vehicle on the road is driven by a homicidal idiot who wants to kill you"

Second Lesson:
"Imagine an ellipse round your bike. It should go forward to the point where you can stop, each side of you the width of the lane and behind half the distance in front.
If ANYTHING enters the ellipse take action to remove it: you can go faster, slower, stop, whatever. But get the threat away from you."

Both lessons work just as well when driving.
