Thanks all. Providing it could be held rigidly while the glue sets it could be glued/bonded. I would just be wary about getting a good enough surface for a permanent bond. With rivets you have to be sure they won't rub anywhere so some go in from the top and some go in from the bottom. And I ground as much off as I could without compromising strength.
Building it up from sections is the best method!
