Many thanks for all the suggestions. There has not been an overwhelming interest in the boat trailer adaptation. In fact the smallest trailer in this range by Brian James is not much bigger:

It would allow loading frontwards and would need a folding aluminium ramp for the rear wheel. Price seems very competitive with what I was quoted.
