The Tesla is a great car - driven 3 versions of it so far and the tech 'just works'. Great ride quality and quieter than any Rolls it's a great place to spend a long journey, and the handling is remarkably good for a big car given the low COG.
I think the interior is a bit Anerican and the big screen is somewhat distracting but nothing awful. Where they missed a trick is in the styling. It could look far more interesting.
In terms of practicality the challenge is home charging. You really need a 3 phase supply to get the best charging speeds. At the very least if you're running several cars then a 32A line will be required. For me with only 12A in the garage and far too long a cable run to the garage to sort out without getting in to digging trenches and laying conduit it's a non starter for now.
For me the i8 gets the styling right, still offers enough room for the family for trips out and with 16 miles of electric range means I cover most local trips without using any fuel at all anyway but don't have any range anxiety when suddenly called upon to do 500 miles in a day...
I can see the Model 3 being a big seller in a couple of years though - ideal second car for a lot of people...
