If the Allen head becomes damaged, try pinching outer part of head with mole grips and turning anti-clockwise. I think it sits slightly proud of rim so this may be possible - budget for new screw and grease before fitting. I make a habit of this with all removed screws initially.

It's an advantage to use a socket set Allen key of correct (metric) size. Typically better quality and a tighter fit, allowing more twisting force without damaging head. Might be worth trying such first.
