Ken, with the radiator cap off and filled, squeeze the top hose and see if air bubbles out. Fit the cap. Release the squeeze. That should remove a small amount of air in that area.
It's a shame there isn't a bleed valve in the top hose to allow air out. Years ago my Renault 18 had one and it made air purging much easier.
