It looks like he was more interested in the road car operation as it grew F1 success fell away.
Like VW once you have established a lucrative market why spend more than you need to. Ron is a cynical person IMHO.
I don't know much about Ron or McLaren but I do think they lost out badly when Mercedes decided to fund their own team taking their resource with them
