As a younger driver I do think the driving test is in some ways to easy. The pass plus element should be compulsory as the standard of driving has definitely got worse.
Agree 100%...we wouldn't let our kids out on their own until this had been done. We also paid for a refresher course 12 months after they had passed.
The result has saved us a fortune....
Eleanor: passed her test 6 weeks after her 17th birthday in 2003. Drove to 6th form in her Yaris, then to Southampton University for 3 years.
No accidents, no convictions despite 30k miles a year as a key account manager for Bayer and Monsanto for the last 5 years.
Andrew: passed his test 12 weeks after his 17th birthday in 2006. Drove to school in his Clio, then to Bournemouth University for a year: one accident, not his fault: rammed in the back whilst stationary. Car written off, he is left with whiplash damage and was partly responsible for him dropping out of Uni.
But since then no accidents, no convictions and he is very quick...presently drives a 300bhp Focus ST.
Both have full NCDs and Eleanor, as she is over 30, is insured to drive the Mercedes. Hell will freeze over before either drive Tarka!!
Training is everything. I support the concept of a refresher 1 day training course for all drivers every 5 years and when I rode a bike I did one every 2 years.
Everyone needs to have a qualified professional analyse and offer constructive criticism. We ALL develop sloppy habits.
