I did it by motorcycle in the summer of 2015 on my tour around Ukraine, Moldova, Romania, Bulgaria and Serbia.
It was the only day on the trip we had any rain! At the start of it there is a nice place to stop and eat which was originally a holiday lodge of the Ceausecou's.
There are quite a few other roads that are fun too and I would recommend a visit to Sibiu. If you go in July when I did. you can catch the Red Bull Romaniacs Prolog event in the ventre of the town
