If you look closely you can see that his side arms are attached to a short intermediate bracket by a single bolt. This would allow each bracket to pivot slightly and so ease alignment of mudguard with wheel.

The new kit, possibly to cheapen production, has the black anodised brackets attaching direct to swing arm. Its not difficult but time consuming to fit. There seems to be at least 3/4 inch clearance each side, between mudguard support nylock nuts and rear tray when fitted, so you have some leeway. Definitely a case of check twice drill once though wink
