OK, have to help me out here. I've spent a fair bit of time on that side of the pond, but have to admit that, as a yank, I have no clue as to the meaning of this statement.
There's a popular 'Reality TV' show in the UK, called "Come Dine With Me", which is a favourite of Mrs Speed. He would (very sensibly, in my view) rather spend time in the garage cleaning his car than sitting with her watching the aforementioned show.
