Thought that I would give you all an update on the pinking problem.....
it's fixed and thanks to Terry Clarke at the Garage bar and grill in Durham who had experienced a similar problem with a rally car of his.
so the solution is a real simple one, Change the fuel for BP ultimate and not only did the pinking go within a mile of leaving the fuel station but the car is now like a totally different car running smoother than before and with so much more power too I just can not believe the change and apparently even though many fuel stations offer higher quality fuel it is only BP and Shell that have constant quality and don't vary that much from station to station.

Bobster, I agree with all you say about the ability of this engine when feeded with high octane fuel, nevertheless I'm wondering why your car has pinking when using regular petrol. If you will stay now with premium fuel, my question is only of academical nature. But for me it sounds as your knock sensor or which cause ever will not adapt the ignition timing to lower octane fuel.
