On a 2005 Roadster, I wired in a Flexilite Thermostat controlled switch with a sensor that is installed in the upper hose. Used #10 wire and no relay. This was supposed to be a temporary fix until the Owner could visit a Ford Dealer. 2 years later and it is still in use.
I think the problem was a faulty connector but not sure.
