I have seen a couple of cars with exhaust flaps. They were to divert the flow from the silencer normal route ( usually not straight) to a straight through alternative pipe. Purpose was to improve flow and noise. Not sure if a BMW is set up like that though.
Some car modders fit a flap valve to dump the ehaust out before the silencer box to the underside, cutting out a big part of the system.
