There was a documentary on the goggle box a while ago about the unarmed spitfires used for reconnaissance. Unbelievably brave to be venturing so deep into enemy territory totally unarmed.
On the documentary I saw one of the former pilots said (with typical modesty) that it was no big deal as the light weight of the unarmed spitfires meant they were quicker than pretty much anything in the skies.
