Well, that was strange. I removed the entire alarm and immobilizer yesterday and could not find anywhere were it was actually plugged in to prevent the car starting!
There was a power input from the battery and a wire that ran to the the ignition in addition to the normal wire that ran there, not in place of it.
Load of junk, badly installed.
