Thanks to everyone for the useful suggestions and help; it is a real added bonus knowing there are so many of you out there to lend a hand!
I filled up at my local supermarket this week and much to my delight it couldn't have been easier. It was a very old pump and worked exactly as it should. I'm guessing the speed of delivery and sensitivity of the new pumps just don't work that well with Morgans. On the most part I shall now been fine and will just keep an eye open for old petrol stations when I travel further afield!
