Has anyone who has converted to new/modern/stainless/expensive kept the original/not-too-rusty/tinny/cheap versions because mine are beginning to be commented on by strangers and let the rest of the car down! Anything suitable for 1988 Plus-8 wanted

Have you tried giving them the 'Solvol Autosol' treatment. A tube of cream cleaner stuff.
I would be surprised if you cannot bring them back to sparkling.
The wheels on this old Peddle car were rusty when I bought it. I could not get the wheels re chromed without damaging the solid tyres - so bought a tube.
Great on Stainless and Chrome, even on Aluminium. The finish lasts as well.
