I wonder if your temperature gauge is the same as modern(ish) Jaguars though Peter.
On the XK-8 etc for example, the oil pressure and temerature are driven from the ECU. The gauges do not show the actual temp or oil pressure, unless an aftermarket modification kit is fitted. On the Jag the temperature will rise to approx 90 and remain there while the car is running...
Not certain, it is possible to show the numerical value in the LCD display within the speedometer. So When it is good and hot I must take a reading using the IR temperature measuring device at key points and compare with the information provided. If they correlate then however the value is derived, it is meaningful...
There is a temperature warning light that is supposed to come on when the car is running "too hot".
But to be honest, as long as the engine is seemingly working well, not vomiting fluid, etc I don't worry...
