Maybe we could develop CHP plants using our waste to heat & light homes.

We already do, John. There are many Biomethane generating plants on line, and a few neighborhood CHP schemes running on Biomass.

CHP schemes at the moment usually use natural gas as a fuel, but as they make use of both the power and the waste heat they represent a much more efficient use of the energy. One of the biggest is Fellside, which is a CHP plant located at Sellafield. It supplies steam and electricity for the nuclear reprocessing activities and also exports spare electriciy to the national grid.
