JTL - good luck to your daughter and son-in-law choosing their dog. Some good advice given in this thread. A good mate of mine had a Ridgeback and it is true that they form a very strong bond with one person who they consider their 'alpha'. It can be very difficult for the dog if they spend time with two 'owners' ie with your daughter and SIL in the evening and with you/June in daytimes. My mate's dog would be very dominant (to the point of growling) with his wife or visitors if his 'alpha' wasn't around. So on a sample of one, I'd think about whether this is the right breed. His was a male - I don't know whether a bitch would be different.
A bulldog (a breed I have kept for 20yrs) will give its obedience and affection to anyone who has ever given it a biscuit - and will reward this kindness by never forgetting. Much easier breed to spend time with different people (but very slow to train...)
