Seems to be a combination of vibration screwing up the internals and really nasty external cabling that has brittle insulation that wears through on the positive wire giving incipient and increasing short circuits before the final failure. The original earth connection wasn't great either which can't have helped. The Chinese and Harley regs need the connector crimp changed to a bigger one to fit the positive terminal in front of the oil tank.
The original crank pinion bolt has a female Torx Plus head, the upgrade bolt has a conventional hex head.
