I bought a 72 4/4 4 seater three years ago, 38 years after first thinking about it.
The rear bench seat is good for luggage, but not for people. Their heads stick above the windscreen and they get the full blast of air. Most of the power from the 1600 engine goes into making the noise and its the most uncomfortable ride on 4 wheels I’ve ever experienced. When the speedo reads 85 it’s doing 70 but feels like a 100. Any faster and it bounces around so much that it feels as though it’s taking off and the noise precludes coherent thought, let alone conversation. The seats are meanly upholstered and offer no support whatsoever. The fuel gauge reads full for the first 200 miles, moves rapidly to 1/4 and stays there until iit is empty. The headlights are a reminder of the Toc H, and as the switches don’t light up groping for the wiper switch in the dark often leads to a total black out. The screen wash will spray your sunglasses as well as a bit of the screen and the two wipers will clear/smear a smaller proportion of it.
The hood can take an age to put up, especially in the cold, and doesn’t stop the rain getting in. It could do with windscreen wipers on the inside. The heater is half hearted at best and really only good for cooling the engine down when it threatens to overheat in a summer traffic jam.
In short it the best car I’ve ever had🙂.
I bought it over the phone from Life’s in Southport for £15,500, so well within your budget, with 35000 on the clock (plus another 100,000 from the first time around) and ran out of fuel on the M40 on the way home (see comments above about the fuel gauge).
Good luck with your search when the time comes. If you are not too precious about it (and can bear the thought of it getting wet or dirty) they are great fun all year round.
