Airbags were fitted for a while on some export cars and as a UK option. You got the Land Rover steering wheel which looked awful. Thats why the structure changed in 1997.
I'm not convinced the regs would allow a retro fit, and think of the liability if the airbag you designed causes a fatality or doesn't prevent one.
If you want to enjoy cars like Trads and Caterhams and most Classics and motorbikes, then you have to set aside this concern.
If you can't then buy a modern.
