The 1980s car stalks were thin metal tubes covered in plastic and had to be bent to get them to fit. It's one of those jobs that you have to do firmly but gently, and in one go. I think they come from something like a Triumph Dolomite originally

I have no idea about the later switches, but it wouldn't surprise me if they were similar.
