Optometrist visit today. As far as she's concerned, I'm fine. She said she wasn't allowed to tell the customer - DVLA again!

The difference is that the normal "follow the dot" test is monoptic. The driving test is binoptic. I hope that's the right spelling but you get the gist. They even want the "read the chart" eyesight test done without glasses even if you wear them all the time.

Optician - Dispenses glasses and lenses
Optometrist - Examines the eyes for the prescription
Opthalmologist - Does surgery.
