I loved the smell of Wrights Coal Tar Soap.
I spent an "Interesting" 6 months at Coalite chemicals in Bolsover in early 1990. Everywhere stank of TCP and other chemicals distilled out of the tar that came from the Coalite smokeless fuel production. The plant also enjoyed a mini-Seveso incident in 1968, but for whatever reason it never attracted the same publicity as the one in Italy in 1976. In both cases the surrounding area was contaminated with Dioxins.
You can still buy the soap, but the smell is a fragrance, not real coal tar.
Coal tar is toxic, possibly carcinogenic and incredibly long lasting.
It also kills all known germs, dead. Also most invertebrates and in water all fish.
Peter, I drove past that site on the way to work and back from 1989 to 2001 on my way to Ashover
It's been sold for a huge housing development & they are about 4 or 5 years into the decontam (they call it site remediation now), I remember the huge settling lakes of yuck and would certainly not live in a house built there
