The present day legal requirements don't apply to your 1982 car Owen.
No doubt Keith will correct me, but so long as your plate can be read from a distance of IIRC 25 feet, your car is legal (on reflective yellow rear plate). A Google search will probably reveal the required distance.
My '93 has the lower plate.
