I have "German Style" pressed metal plates, in the modern colours. As my Registration is only 6 characters, including the space, the plates are shorter.

The producer assured me that are 100% legal as the gap between each letter/number and the black edge of the plate is exactly as specified, as is the font. top and bottom.
When I called them told me that if I had a single Letter-Number registration, for example "A1" the number plate could be very small!!

Peter, pressed metal plates are not legal. Your plate does not have the BSAU number nor the makers name / or post code. Your supplier knows well enough it's not legal otherwise his name or postcode would be on it. Same goes for Craig no BSAU number or makers name / postcode.
