In order to post an image as your avatar you must use the "Image URL" (second selection down) without the usual img tags.

I don't know why it should be the case but the forum script is very slow to pick up a change in the avatar.

By the way the forum script will accept a slightly larger image than that specified but will always display in the size specified.
