Mine are definitely angled forwards.
As you have surmised most racers try to get the weight of the engine as far back in the chassis as possible. This will of course have changed the dimensions elsewhere on the car. Probably the most important will be the gearbox mountings and possibly prop shaft length.
When building a race car most series competitors (and almost all of those in Class A?) will start with a new chassis, and make the necessary modifications to it before starting to fit any drivetrain or body components. I suspect the gearbox mounting crossmember will have been moved back in the car a few cms, but it is also possible that the mountings have been extended from the original position (although I would think this unlikely)
One of Rob Wells race cars (ROB 8R) had the engine mounted so far back that I seem to remember that the gearbox change mechanism needed some modification so that it still fell to hand, but that is almost certainly a one-off.
