It was considered that the driver sitting on the right hand side was better for use on race tracks - I think that Bugatti followed this principle for their road cars as well. Perhaps a Bugatti expert here can confirm this.

As they are such narrow cars, and there were so few other vehicles on the road I guess it didn't make a huge amount of difference. I seem to remember hearing somewhere that for screaming up and down Alps and so on with no Armco barriers, the driver being on the kerb-side of the car was seen as an advantage.
