Peter had moved his compression release to the strut (looks like a brake lever from a motorcycle). It's usually under the dash but if you're hand cranking from the front you really need the compression release up front. It's not easy to hand-crank the JAP LTOWZ engine since you're turning the camshaft, which is then trying to turn the crank at twice that speed and requiring twice the effort.
