I am relatively new to the forum, bought a 2010 used Plus 4 in March. Lots of local runs, but last week did the Welsh Tour (1,000 miles in 6 days). Fabulous weather, great roads, and little traffic. A real opportunity to see what the car and I could both achieve.
The car had done 9,000 miles before I purchased it, and by the end of the week, with lots of hill climbs and descents it had really loosened up. Very much more willing and eager to go, a different car.
I suspect it had never been driven vigorously before, and one of the reasons for this suspicion was the accelerator pedal.
The previous owner had specified a factory fitted the organ pedal.
However it proved to be down right dangerous, on two separate occasions it jammed fully open under acceleration. Not a pleasant experience. After the second time I removed the organ pedal plate and used the roller pedal on its own. (Much better feel and responsive)
On closer examination of the organ pedal plate, it appeared to be a rough casting and the rear loop was not evenly shaped, it tapered towards the top, i.e. full travel of accelerator. So when putting the foot down, the organ pedal effectively trapped the plastic roller on the accelerator arm and held it in the fully open position. Potentially lethal, if not downright scary!
Interested to read on TM that this has also happened to others, and that made me remove the bloody thing before incident number 3.
You may want to check yours if you have one fitted.
Once I got back to the bare accelerator then it was great, no concerns and a really super opportunity to see what the car could do. Big smiles, will be back to Wales again post school holidays when the roads quieten down.
