The biggest issue with the unpainted aluminium is fingerprints and surface contamination. I do think you can put a protective layer over is - lacquer?
Charles Morgan addressed this issue, stating that lacquer would yellow over time. I wonder what Apple has applied to their computers to protect the finish – seems to work very well.
