Months later, I finally got a call saying that they had arrested him, but during interview he denied everything and as they had lost the CCTV footage (despite me providing it on three occasions) had released him without charge.
I once worked for a manufacturer of CCTV Systems (in the days when digital PC based systems were new to the market). One of the sales team had a patter re taking copies of footage:
"You need to take at least three copies: one to keep, one for the police and one to replace the one the police lost"
On the plus side, when some local herberts broke in to head office and stole the reception PC, the footage led to a conviction - being a demo system, we had the resolution wound up to maximum and stinking great HDDs to make sure. Ours was quite a high end system too - used in prisons, large hotels and at least one landmark building in London.
