A left field suggestion - a BMW i3. Does everything a Golf would do, with less of the bland design. New, you'd probably find a dealer could be persuaded to fit your budget. Used, you'll have plenty of choice, and £10k left.
Personally I'd buy a range extender version (Not now available new, and with a petrol engine) - it probably depends on how you'd plan to use the car, and the state fo the public charging infrastructure in the places you travel to.
The i3 looks so innocent - but to quote EVO "it accelerates from 50mph to 74.5mph (120km/h) in just 4.9 seconds - only 0.6 seconds slower than the DCT-equipped BMW M4" so there's potential fun to be had.
