Hamilton and Giovinazzi both passed two signs showing a pit lane closure. No excuse. My only doubts are the timings of red flag and pit lane closure. The crashed car was in a position where it would have to be pushed down part of the pit lane, mainly the approach. Where it was initially , yes, vulnerable, but surely the sequence should have been..
Close pit lane.
Cars pass the entrance, virtual safety car for that lap and more until pit lane was clear. Safety car to bunch up not needed. Radio messages to stay out until the crashed car was cleared.
OK, snap decisions needed so the Mercedes call “box box” with Hamilton so close to the pit lane was premature but a reaction thing. Hamilton did see the closure signs yet came in. His error compounded by lack of clarity from Mercedes who also appeared to miss the closure decision. Looks like their brains were in strategy mode causing the lapse.
It made for a good race though!
