Wise move to steer clear of silicone on the paintwork ;if you have ever had the dreaded
'fisheyes' in your newly painted finish you will know what I mean.....

That's a good point. I've used silicone in the past to re fix door seals that have fallen off, it worked well but could have been an issue
later had the door needed painting. I would have thought a good panel wipe or cleaner would remove any silicone residue but maybe not.
