My one encounter with a Cat D repair was on a Saab 9000, bought for £4k at 150k miles: I gave it away 125k miles later, having had £2750 Cat D insurance repair money (main dealer costings) to cover accident damage which was fixed by my tame mechanic for £250. The car wore a jaunty scar on its bonnet after the repair, which enhanced its road-worn appearance.
£1250 cost for 125,000 miles is the best bargain I've ever had (& nobody hurt in the emergency stop :-) )
