The answer I have discovered - very much as per Lorne Goodman on GoMog - is not to pry as I really couldn't find a suitable point for leverage other than steering arms.

LG recommends a "well placed jack" topped by a wooden pillar of about 6" length to press op underneath the inboard end of the damper plate. Weight of car is already securely on two inboard axle stands, so this method locks into place leaving me both hands to handle the grease gun. After that, no problem!

So Dave, for those who must pry, I still wonder how long is your lever and what is your fulcrum?
