I remember cruising past the port of Riposto at the base of Etna whilst it was erupting one July evening in 2001. Apologies for poor picture.

Some time later we pulled into the marina there and were horrified at the amount of black dust and grit on the streets and footpaths of this coastal town and adjacent Giarre. Later still we took the narrow gauge railway that runs inland around the base of Etna. The view towards the volcano was akin to a desolate lunar landscape for much of the journey, formed by the solidified lava flows.
