Also, be aware that most lodging on the parkway may be closed for the winter. So make reservations in advance to make sure they are open. Most of the towns to the side are "straight down" so fun driving. It is about a day to get from Front Royal to hwy 8 and down to Floyd VA and Floyd has lodging and is kind of an old hippy town.
