They installed a removable plate in the bottom at some point, so in theory the air filter could be removed without all that effort...

I took this photo in the factory in 2017 of a Plus 8 in build, and it shows the air box, but I'm not certain how the clips could be undone to allow the filter to be replaced...

So it is still a bit of a mystery.
