Just another practical point: I have come across computerised balancing machines which will throw up an error when cones are used, as they want to feel the wheel hub firmly touching the machine’s backplate. Older machines are less fussy.
Good point. When I made mine I added a separate plastic disc to ensure a good spread of contact with the face of the balancer. It's never been needed though.
