In a way I reckon you have answered your own question with your last paragraph. Character and quirkyness amount to much the same thing and if you see a Morgan as characterful, its unlikely you would see an MX5 in the same light. Relative reliability removed from the list such things as the Jensen that someone suggested and indeed all other classics pre the 90s. Vehicle reliability improved in leaps and bounds in the 90s. Great owners to chat to - you will find that with most other enthusiast marques.

The ARP4 is a sports car so a family saloon of the big Jag sort wont substitute. Only things I can think of to fit your criteria that arent Morgan are Porker and Lotus. The likes of Merc SL are simply too ordinary. Or you could always go Ferrari for a 348 or 360. Mechanically pretty reliable . My vote would be Evora is you can tolerate a coupe rather than a spider.
