The previous owner told me a story about using the front suspension oiler in which the valve didn't close, causing him to lose a fair amount of engine oil. I've intended to hold the valve with my foot for 3-4 seconds, pause, and stop the engine, thinking I'd avoid the problem about which I'd been warned. This requires remembering to do so upon parking the car, a tall order for this old guy. Furthermore, I've found it quite frustrating to try to apply my foot to the valve button, even though my shoe is a modest size 10 (US Size), with the interference of the brake and clutch pedals. So, the sliding pillars have not gotten the regular attention that they deserve.

I've never looked under the hood of a +8 with the Rover V8. I presume this is a tighter fit.
