I can get my whole hand (the hand is small) into the hole and it is not as long as what Bleazey cut but I just could not understand why a longer hole was necessary. Maybe someone can enlighten me before I reinstall the unit.
What I would say is that when you actually come to be lying under the car performing the surgery & having to use a hex wrench through the hole, you will probably welcome as big a hole as you can get! Although, width is probably more important than length if you see what I mean.
Your photo also nicely shows how MMC use a star washer on top of a plain washer to attach the outer Centa housing to the crank.
