If you use Phils inserts , they come with a handy lug moulded on for helping with the extraction - you dont need to put your hand in a far as your picture.
I have largish hands , so this is a great help to me.
I would go with Bunnys comment about width - making the slot as wide as you can will help with removing the bolts holding the ring on which stop the inserts moving when in use.
You use an outer set of bolts to bar the compensator over , while removing the inner set to free the insert retaining ring i.e. push it backwards enough to extracts the inserts.
