An update.
Today after a few weeks and over 500 miles I removed the ali panel to see if the paint was being damaged. Despite fitting a neoprene seal to the edge the panel has left light scratches in the panel.



Luckily these polished out. So time for a rethink as clearly it is either the panel or the spare not both.
